Day 28 - Project 365
"Going Postal"
Day 28 started with the desperate need for a hair cut and a theme. My beard had to stay but the hair on my head was starting to be indistinguishable from the hair on my face. I headed over to my favorite barber shop for a freshy. Blend Masters is an old style barber shop with a modern twist. Its filled with a cast of characters you'd except to find in a movie. Witty banter and constant teasing make the atmosphere fun and unforgettable. I made my appointment with Shorty for 2:30. When I arrived the owner Cubby (pictured) was sitting in the first chair dressed as the post man. I say whats up and we start chatting about Project 365 and what Its all about.
I say, "I brought my gear, we should make day 28 someone in your shop" He mentioned Shorty but I wanted someone who was a little more in your face and would work with the theme I had in mind. We originally went with Jesus but he didn't seem to into the idea. I decided to get the shot after my haircut. Shorty did an exemplary job once again, paying attention to every detail… except the beard! We finished in record time and I was ready to capture the shot. Cubby had started a cut and when I suggested he be in the shot, he jumped at the opportunity. I set the beauty dish up and boomed it overhead slightly. A few test shots later and I realized I needed a major adjustment. I moved the light a few times until I found the most ideal position. I was going to capture a serious hair cutting portrait but Cubby decided it would be fun to act like the crazy barber. I'm a fan of wide angle lens' when shooting comedy. I ran out to the truck grabbed, the lens and made my way back in. Cubby grabbed a silver grill, slapped it in his mouth and without me knowing had two phones. I snapped away about a dozen shots trying to get as much coverage as possible as I didn't want to be a bother.
The shot below was a replacement as the original shot was just upsetting me too much. This one is more intense and has more feeling to it. Despite the more serious look and mood, I like it better this way. I don't plan on changing my mind like this much but I felt it necessary to change it today. Thanks for the help of a few loyal project followers and a few friends.
Before leaving the shop I discussed two other possible themes that will work great for the cast of the barber shop. I hope to be back soon and not just to get my hair cut.
